Twenty four species in alpine lichen heath and Festuca varia- dominated grassland (the Northwest Caucasus, Russia) were studied under for defoliation treatments (no defoliation, one, two and three times during growth season). There was no compensative regrowth in any studied species. Regrowth decreased from one to three defoliations and from first to the third year of the experiment. Number of shoots recovered better than shoot biomass. Two strategies of regrowth were described: 1) regrowth after defoliation in the current season (e.g. Oxytropis kubanensis), 2) only next season regrowth (e.g. Polygonum bistorta). Species with low and high recovering ability were found in both studied communities. Festuca ovina and Antennaria dioica were the most sensitive to defoliation species, but Oxytropis kubanensis and Trifolium polyphyllum were the most tolerant species. Plant species from alpine lichen heath tended to be more tolerant then plants from the grassland.

Isoenzymatic analysis, carried out within 3 populations of Russian natural habitat of chestnut from the Caucasian Black Sea coastline, in whole, showed their low alteration and heterozygosity. Comparison of alteration of morphological features (stem, leaves, fruit) and genetic features (alleles of isoenzymes) showed their partial correspondence. Alteration of the climatic conditions of growing corresponds better with the results of isoenzymatic analysis. However, morphological alteration is better explained by the historical preconditions of populations’ development within the landscape. The big-fruittest chestnut-trees are heterozygosious concerning the most polymorph genes Dia-1 and Pgm

The analysis has been done of the history of degradation of the natural ecosystems of the Northern-Western Caucasus. Their actual state has been shown and the necessity has been argued of the ecological restoration of natural vegetation at the coastal parts of numerous steppe rivers, streams and artificial water reservoirs for the purpose of stabilization and stable functioning of agro- and urban-landscapes.

There are evidences that the invisibility of biological communities is partly determined by species saturation level. The antropogenic impacts and habitat fragmentation can change species saturation and, consequently, the invasion resistance of communities. The goal of our study was to test, whether indeed antropogenic factors influence on species saturation of high mountain meadow communities and the tree layer of low mountain forests on the north-west Caucasus. The relative level of local species saturation was estimated by analysis of the relationships between species richness in smaller (S) and larger (N) plots: the higher are values of N/S ratio the higher is relative level of the local species saturation of these communities on larger plots. The results show, that species saturation level of non isolated and isolated communities or communities with absence and presence of human disturbances is approximately equal.

The peculiarities of the mycosymbiotrophism of the 22 species of the orchids in the North-West Caucasus have been studied. The eumycetic tolypophage endomyco(r)rhiza are ascertained for all the autotrophic species; for the saprotrophic ones – the eumycetic ptyophage endomyco(r)rhiza are studied. On the basis of the quantitative studies of the mycorriza growth rate in the orchids roots the relationships (dependencies) between the life form, the age state, the ecoconditions and the peculiarities of the mycosymbiotrophism have been established.

Heavy metals’ content in the bottom sedimentations is one of the most objective and reliable indexes of the river ecosystem’s contamination and its common anthropogenic pressure. Normalization of heavy metals’ content by natural absorbents is in the basis of the technique elaborated for evaluation of the contamination level of the river ecosystems by heavy metals in sedimentations. This mainly determines the appropriateness of water objects for drinkable and fish-breeding utilization.

The biological activity is being investigated of soils with light granulometric composition under forest plantations of forest-park zone of Moscow by increased recreational and technogenic load. It is proposed to use the integral indexes of soil’s biological activity as specific and volume respiration, which is evaluated by oxygen absorption under optimal hydrothermal conditions, and measured with portable gas-analyzers. Evaluation is made taking into account the profile distribution of investigated value. The ecological normalization has been made of the biological activity of investigated sod-podzol soils with light granulometric composition under forest vegetation. Applicable test on cellulose-destroying soil’s activity is used as an additional characteristic. Irrespective of the evaluation technique used, a dangerous tendency has been discovered of integral biological activity of forest’s soils decrease in 1.5–3 times; and it has been also discovered the decrease of microbocenose capability for decomposing the organic substances under the impact of intensive recreational load. However, if the recreation is regulated and temperate, the values of potential soil’s respiration and functions of OS biodestruction are within normal range.
